Andrea Hester, PhD

A neuropsychologist is a psychologist who receives specialized training in evaluating issues with cognition (thinking), such as problems with memory, attention, language, problem-solving, processing speed, and visuospatial skills. In addition, possible co-existing psychological and behavioral factors are also assessed when evaluating a patient's neuropsychological functioning.

Dr. Hester received training in neuropsychology in graduate school at UT Austin, as well as during an APA-approved clinical internship at the OU Health Consortium and 2-year residency in clinical neuropsychology at UTSW.

  • To determine cognitive strengths and weaknesses, with suggestions for compensatory strategies if appropriate.
  • To help confirm diagnosis (is it normal aging? does the patient have signs of dementia and if so, what type and how severe?)
  • To assist with treatment recommendations or intervention planning
  • To establish a baseline from which to document and track possible changes over time

  • You and your partner (can be a spouse, family member, caregiver or close friend) will meet with Dr. Hester at NTX Neuropsychology.
  • You will go over the intake forms you completed prior to your visit.
  • You and your partner will complete a clinical interview together, to discuss your symptoms, history, and concerns.
  • After the interview, your partner will leave the room while you complete the testing.
  • The testing is all non-invasive, and will consist of verbal/written tests and puzzles.

Each case is unique, so the time required to complete the evaluation can depend on several factors, including but not limited to the age of the patient, cognitive/behavioral functioning level(s), and complexity of the case.
However, the following times are a good general rule of thumb:
  • Interview: With the patient and family/caregiver/close friend. Typically 45-60 minutes
  • Cognitive testing: Dr. Hester typically spends a range of time from 1.5 to 4 hours+ depending on the aforementioned factors.
  • Follow-up (feedback) Visit: Typically 60 minutes, and scheduled 2 weeks or so after the initial assessment.
  • Relevant medical records, including prior neuropsychological evaluation reports, neuroimaging/diagnostics (MRI, CT, PET, EEG).
  • Updated medication list
  • Glasses/readers and hearing aids
  • Dressing in layers is recommended, in case you get warm or cold during the visit
  • Medication doses that may be needed
As previously noted, evaluations can vary according to different factors, and so there is a range in cost. Please contact Dr. Hester to discuss further.
At this time, Dr. Hester accepts TRADITIONAL Medicare and private pay only.

For out-of-network insurance (private pay), a “superbill” can be generated that can be utilized when independently filing a claim.
Typically, follow-up (feedback) occurs in-office within 2 weeks following the initial assessment. Dr. Hester will review all the results, how it relates to the brain, diagnosis, and any appropriate treatment/referral recommendations. This appointment usually lasts 60 minutes. The patient is provided a copy of the report, as is the referring provider (via fax). The report can also be faxed to other treating providers with the patient’s written consent.
